Shopping experience and growth
How should you investigate abandoned Shopify checkouts?

Separate the stage people leave from the reason they leave. More reminder emails will not fix a payment or shipping problem.
Reproduce the customer’s route
Use a relevant product and destination, then inspect shipping eligibility, total cost, payment errors and mobile fields. Compare product views, cart additions and checkout starts as different events. Review recovery eligibility before assuming every visitor can receive an email. If the route works, look at missing information or offer concerns. Choose a response that matches the barrier instead of automatically discounting every abandoned checkout and reducing margin without knowing why.
Separate the stages
A person who viewed a product, someone who added it to the cart and someone who entered checkout represent different behaviours. Use the relevant report and current recovery eligibility rules instead of assuming every cart can receive an email. Identify where the drop-off occurs before choosing a response.
Look for preventable friction
Test shipping availability, unexpected totals, payment errors and confusing options. Review mobile input fields and whether the checkout matches the promise on the product page. If the underlying problem persists, a reminder can simply send someone back to the same broken experience.
Use recovery messages deliberately
Review the current Shopify recovery workflow and consent requirements for your setup. Keep the message accurate, avoid fabricated scarcity and do not add a discount automatically without considering margin. Compare recovered orders with the cost and customer experience of the intervention.
Investigate a pattern, not one visit
Compare affected devices, traffic sources and checkout stages. Test the same delivery address and payment route where practical. A customer may be comparing prices or returning later; use the evidence to locate a recurring obstacle before changing the whole storefront or sending more reminders.
