How should you organise sizes and colours in Shopify?

Keep genuine choices of the same product together when that matches how customers shop. Give a different design its own identity.
A clothing example
A black abaya offered in several lengths may be one design with length options. An abaya with a different cut or embroidery is not automatically another colour variant of that design. Decide the rule before product entry. Then check what the selected choice does to the photo, price and stock, and confirm that the cart records the intended combination. Consistency helps both the shopper and the person picking the order.
An illustrative clothing catalogue decision
Swipe across the table to see all columns.
| Difference | How to think about it |
|---|---|
| Same design in another size | Usually a buying option of that product; verify stock and cart selection. |
| Same design in another colour | Consider how shoppers compare it and whether images can follow the chosen option. |
| Different cut or embroidery | Treat product identity deliberately rather than hiding a separate design under a colour label. |
| Ready stock versus made to order | Explain fulfilment clearly and configure the supported process; do not make customers infer it. |
Separate a choice from a different product
Ask whether the customer is choosing the same garment in a different size or browsing a different design. A new cut or materially different product may deserve its own page, while size often belongs to a shared product. Use a consistent rule so customers can predict where to find things.
Make variant data operationally useful
Assign accurate SKUs, prices and stock to the combinations you actually sell. Check that colour names match photographs and that unavailable combinations are clearly handled. Do not create options for sizes you never offer simply to make the selector appear complete.
Test the selected state
Open a product from a shared link, change its size and confirm that the cart contains the intended combination. Review sold-out choices and any image changes on mobile. For Arabic stores, agree stable translations for option names while preserving the identifiers used by your operational tools.
Map choices to actual stock
Take one real item and list the choices that change what gets packed, its price or its stock record. Build the options around those differences. Test unavailable combinations and image switching. Similar-looking designs should not be merged if customers would understand them as different products.
