Payments, delivery and launch
How should you set up cash on delivery on Shopify?

Set up the payment choice and the collection process together. Receiving an order does not mean the courier has collected its value.
Follow the money as well as the parcel
Agree where COD is available and what instructions the courier needs. Then define who records delivery, who matches settlements and who updates payment status. A failed delivery and a delivered-but-unreconciled payment are different issues. Keep those stages separate in your review. Test the customer instructions and any real additional charge before publishing. Compare collected results with fulfilment costs rather than counting every placed COD order as paid revenue.
Do not collapse these order states
Swipe across the table to see all columns.
| State | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Order received | The customer submitted an order, not necessarily a collected payment. |
| Dispatched | The parcel entered the delivery process. |
| Delivered | The handover occurred according to the delivery record. |
| Payment reconciled | The received money was matched to the order. |
Explain the conditions clearly
State where COD is available, what the customer needs to prepare and whether your actual delivery arrangement has an additional charge. Confirm the instructions with your courier. Keep the wording near the payment choice so customers do not discover important conditions only after placing an order.
Separate order creation from payment
Shopify manual-payment orders can remain unpaid until the money is received and recorded. An order confirmation is therefore not evidence that a COD payment was collected. Agree who updates payment status and how the team matches courier settlements to orders.
Monitor the operational cost
Track dispatches, successful deliveries, failed attempts and collected amounts using consistent definitions. Compare COD results with the costs of fulfilment and returns. If a destination causes repeated issues, review the process and coverage rather than assuming all placed orders represent completed revenue.
Reconcile the money after delivery
Define how an order moves from placed to delivered, refused or returned and who confirms the collected amount. Include collection fees and remittance timing in your operational review. A storefront payment label does not by itself create a reliable cash record between your team and the delivery partner.
