How do you connect a domain to Shopify without disrupting email?

Change only the DNS records needed for the website connection. Your email may depend on other records that must remain in place.
Record the setup before changing it
Identify the registrar and the DNS host; they may be different. Save the current values and note which support email or verification services. Follow the current store connection instructions rather than replacing the entire zone with a generic example. Afterward, check the storefront and send and receive a business email. Keep renewal and recovery access with the business, and document the final configuration so the next change does not start from guesses.
Record these before a DNS change
Swipe across the table to see all columns.
| Service | Keep a record of |
|---|---|
| Domain registration | Registered contact, renewal owner and recovery access. |
| DNS hosting | Where the records are actually edited. |
| Website hosting | The destination required by the current connection instructions. |
| Business email | The records supporting mail and verification. |
Identify ownership and access
Confirm who owns the domain and where its DNS records are managed. The registrar and DNS host may not be the same provider. Use the merchant’s account and appropriate access permissions; do not make the business dependent on a supplier’s personal login for future renewal.
Preserve unrelated services
Before editing, record the existing DNS values and identify mail, verification and other service records. Follow the current connection instructions shown for your store. Avoid replacing the entire zone with a generic example. If you are unsure which records support email, resolve that before applying changes.
Verify after the change
Check the intended storefront hostname, secure connection and both common domain forms as appropriate. Send and receive a business email to confirm that mail still works. Review links in customer messages and keep a record of the completed configuration, renewal responsibility and any remaining propagation checks.
Separate the website change from email
Before changing DNS, identify the website records and the records used by email and other services. Save the existing configuration and agree who will make the change. Follow the platform's current instructions for your domain setup, then check both the storefront and business email afterward.
