Operations and next steps
How should Shopify inventory work across multiple locations?

Model the places that actually hold and fulfil stock. A total quantity can hide the fact that an item is unavailable where the order needs it.
Test a product available in only one location
Check which destination the order uses and whether pickup is offered appropriately. Agree how transfers, returns and damaged stock are recorded. Include simultaneous sales from the shop and website in the review. If staff move products without updating records, the dashboard can look precise and still be wrong. Assign a reconciliation owner and investigate discrepancies before advertising wider availability or introducing more channels.
Map the real stock
List warehouses, shops or other supported fulfilment locations. Identify which stock can serve online orders or pickup. Avoid combining physically separate quantities in a way the team cannot dispatch.
Test allocation and transfer
Review the configured order-routing and location rules using representative baskets. Check a product available in one location but not another. Document how transfers, damaged stock and corrections are recorded.
Reconcile regularly
Assign owners and compare operational records with the store. Review the effect of returns and concurrent channels. A neat dashboard can still be wrong if stock movements are not entered consistently, so investigate discrepancies before expanding sales coverage.
Trace one item across locations
Choose one product and record where it is physically stored, where it can be sold and which team fulfils each order. Test a transfer and an unavailable location. The online quantity should reflect a defined operating process, rather than a total nobody can reconcile with the shelves.
