What should ongoing Shopify maintenance include?
Keep the store operable and recoverable. A theme copy is useful, but it is not a complete backup of every business record and setting.
Plan the recovery you would really need
Imagine an accidental product edit or a failed integration change. Which exports, theme version and configuration records would let you recover? Keep them securely and understand their limits. Record who owns the domain, apps and payment accounts, including renewals and recovery access. After a significant change, test products, cart, language and contact routes. A maintenance agreement should explain these responsibilities rather than saying only that the agency will “keep the site updated.”
Create an ownership register
Record who manages the domain, theme, apps, payments, catalogue and fulfilment connections. Keep supplier contacts and renewal responsibilities with the business. Review access when people leave the team, and avoid leaving critical accounts owned only by a former contractor.
Match backups to recovery needs
Identify what you would need to restore after an accidental edit or migration problem. Keep appropriate exports, theme versions and configuration records securely. Shopify documents limitations when duplicating store information, so test the recovery process rather than assuming every export can restore everything automatically.
Schedule focused reviews
Check important links, stock presentation, app changes, mobile behaviour and language content. Keep a change log with the affected pages and rollback information. Review after a major campaign or integration change, and verify that customer-facing policies and contact details still match the real operating process.
Ask what can actually be restored
List the information and files your chosen backup method covers, then practise recovering a harmless sample in a safe setting. Identify what needs a separate export or another procedure. A saved theme file and a complete recovery plan are different things; document the limits before an incident.
