Shopping experience and growth
Which search and filters does a Shopify catalogue need?

Use filters that help someone make a real choice and that your product data can support consistently. More attributes can make browsing harder.
Try combinations, including an empty result
For clothing, size or fabric may matter, but check whether the values are complete and consistently named. Duplicate colour spellings can split useful results. Test common searches in the store’s languages, then combine filters until few or no items remain. Can shoppers see and remove active choices? On mobile, make sure closing the panel does not lose their context. Fix missing catalogue data before blaming the filter interface.
Choose meaningful distinctions
For a fashion collection, size, colour, fabric or occasion may matter. Only show an attribute when it meaningfully separates the products and the data is maintained. A filter full of duplicate spellings or empty results makes a catalogue harder to trust.
Test customer language
Search using product names, common synonyms and terms appearing in enquiries. Review results in the languages the store supports. Check whether important products can be found without knowing their exact internal name. Keep search behaviour and collection filtering consistent where possible.
Review empty and narrow results
Try combinations that produce few items or none. Customers should understand which choices are active and how to remove them. On mobile, check whether opening and closing filters preserves context. Record missing catalogue values and fix the data before blaming the filter interface.
Use values you can maintain
Choose filters that reduce a real customer's search, then standardise the underlying values. If the same colour has several spellings, clean the data before displaying it as a filter. Test a narrow combination and its empty state so shoppers can recover without starting again.
