What are Shopify metafields useful for?

Think of metafields as organised places for product facts, such as fabric or care instructions, instead of repeating everything in a loose description.
When the extra structure helps
If you sell 50 garments and want fabric to appear in the same place on every page, a dedicated field can make editing easier. Agree what the field means and how empty values behave. Entering the data is only half the job: the theme must show it correctly. Try changing one value and check the product page. Avoid creating several fields for the same fact just because different apps suggest them.
Model information customers need
For a garment, separate fields might hold fabric, care instructions or a size-guide reference. Decide which facts belong to every product and which are optional. Shopify’s metafield definitions describe the expected data type; match the type to the information you intend to store.
Plan how values reach the page
Saving a value does not by itself guarantee that shoppers will see it in the right place. The theme must display the intended information through its supported configuration or development. Preview products with populated and empty fields so missing content does not create awkward labels.
Create an editing convention
Name fields clearly, record their purpose and assign responsibility for filling them. Avoid several nearly identical fields maintained by different apps. Test a small product group first, then check whether the structure makes updates easier for the person who actually manages the catalogue.
Use a field when the information repeats
If several products need the same kind of information, such as a material or care note, define its meaning and format once. Decide who enters it and where the theme displays it. Test a missing value too; a field in the admin does not automatically create a useful storefront section.
