Which product photos does a Shopify store need?
Include the views that help someone judge the real item: overall shape, back, detail and scale when relevant. More photos are not always more information.
Plan the gallery around buying questions
For a garment, a full view explains the cut while a close-up can show fabric or finishing. Do not use four nearly identical crops while leaving the back unseen. Check the collection thumbnail separately: a campaign crop can hide the product at small sizes. Keep colours believable and make sure every view belongs to the same design. Add video when movement answers a question still photos cannot, not merely to fill the gallery.
Create a repeatable shot list
For clothing, consider a complete front view, a back view and details of the fabric or finishing. If fit matters, identify the size shown and relevant model measurements only when known. Keep colour representation consistent and avoid retouching that changes the garment customers will receive.
Separate catalogue and campaign roles
A campaign image can create mood; a catalogue image must also make the product legible. Test crops in collection cards and on the product page. Maintain a consistent visual approach across related items so shoppers can compare silhouettes without the photography becoming a distraction.
Prepare files for the storefront
Use descriptive filenames and relevant alternative text. Choose appropriate display dimensions instead of uploading every asset in its largest available version. Review loading behaviour on mobile and make sure all views belong to the same design and colour. Keep original files securely for future edits.
Photograph the uncertainty
List what customers cannot judge from the main image and plan the other views around those questions. Keep the selected option and imagery consistent. Check the crop on mobile before exporting the full catalogue; beautiful source photographs can lose important detail when displayed in a different shape.
