Choosing a platform
Shopify vs Squarespace: which suits a content and retail business?

Decide how much of the site is publishing and how much is commerce. A good portfolio demo does not answer inventory or fulfilment questions.
Compare two everyday updates
Ask your team to publish an article and change a product with options. Then review the customer route, payments and languages in the proposed plan. List external tools required for scheduling or fulfilment so the comparison includes their costs and limitations. If the project is mostly presentation with a small sales element, that may lead to a different choice from a growing retail catalogue. Choose after the tasks, not before them.
Balance the priorities
List editorial pages, portfolio content, catalogue requirements and the expected purchase route. A beautiful portfolio demonstration does not prove complex merchandising works, and an extensive commerce dashboard may not be necessary for a simple presentation site.
Check specific capabilities
Test required languages, payment providers, digital or physical fulfilment and any scheduling tools in the proposed configuration. Confirm current availability rather than relying on an old comparison chart. Record where a third-party service is required.
Review the owner experience
Have the future editor update a product and a content page. Compare recurring costs, support, export and domain handling. Choose the approach whose practical limitations you understand and can maintain.
Demonstrate the difficult content and product
Choose one representative editorial page and one product with your real options. Ask for both to be built in the proposed setup. Review editing, eligible payments and ongoing costs. A platform comparison becomes useful when it explains your daily work, not when it only compares attractive templates.
