Operations and next steps
What should you check before selling Shopify gift cards?

Treat the card as a promise of future redemption. Review the buyer, recipient and remaining-balance process rather than testing the purchase alone.
Test the gift, not just the transaction
Buy through an authorised test route, inspect delivery and try the intended redemption flow. If buyer and recipient differ, check who receives what. Approve value, currency and commercial conditions with the owner instead of copying expiry language from another store. Decide who handles missing emails or balance questions, and protect redemption details. A gift card is different from a discount; its records and ongoing customer commitment need clear ownership.
Define the offer
Explain value, delivery and how the recipient redeems the card. Confirm currency and any applicable conditions with the business owner. Do not invent expiry or refund rules from another store’s design.
Test the recipient journey
Review purchase, email delivery and redemption in the actual setup. Check gift purchases where buyer and recipient are different people. Make support instructions easy to find without exposing redemption information publicly.
Plan reconciliation
Identify who handles unused balances, customer questions and any permitted adjustments. Keep records and access appropriate to the financial workflow. Review policy and accounting requirements with qualified advice when needed rather than assuming the product setting settles them.
Try redemption as the recipient
Test the supported delivery and redemption process with a sample amount. Check partial use, remaining balance and the case where a product costs more than the card. Explain who receives the card and which terms apply before purchase, rather than assuming the buyer and recipient are the same person.
