Payments, delivery and launch

How do you plan Shopify shipping rates?

Delivery truck with a shipping-rate card.

Start from your courier agreement and the baskets you sell. The checkout rate should describe a service you can actually fulfil.

Test the edges of the rule

Try one item, several items and a basket containing products with different fulfilment needs. Check an address near the edge of coverage and a basket close to a free-shipping threshold, with discounts applied. Record why each total should be correct. Separate your preparation time from carrier transit time in the wording. When a courier or product category changes, update the rules and the policy together so checkout does not contradict the product page.

One itemDoes the normal rate match the approved offer?

Address outside coverageIs the customer told clearly that this destination is unsupported?

Create a delivery matrix

List destinations, delivery method, typical dispatch process, customer charge and exclusions. Distinguish the time you need to prepare an order from the courier’s transit time. Confirm unusual addresses, heavy items and remote areas before describing a service as available throughout a country.

Test representative baskets

Try a single item, multiple items and products with different fulfilment requirements. Check addresses inside and outside coverage, and review any free-shipping threshold with discounts applied. Record unexpected totals so the team can identify whether the issue comes from product data or the configured rule.

Keep content aligned with checkout

The product page, shipping policy and checkout should explain the same offer. If coverage or charges change, update all relevant wording. Avoid promising a universal arrival date unless operations can support it. Review your delivery matrix whenever you introduce a new product category or courier.

Compare the displayed fee with the real order

Use representative baskets, weights and delivery destinations to check the proposed rules against actual carrier or fulfilment costs. Include the exceptions that matter to your catalogue. A flat fee can be simple for customers, but somebody still needs to understand when the business absorbs a difference.
