Choosing a platform

Should you use your own Shopify store or a marketplace?

Two website options compared side by side.

Compare where customers will find you and who controls the buying process. You can use both routes if stock and order handling stay reliable.

The work changes with the channel

A marketplace can provide a place where people already browse, but eligibility, fees and customer-data access depend on its terms. An independent store gives you a route you organise, but does not arrive with guaranteed visitors. Compare actual costs and support responsibility. If both sell the same stock, decide how the final unit is protected from double-selling. Measure delivered and paid outcomes instead of treating a large channel audience as confirmed demand for your products.

Map discovery and purchase

A marketplace may provide a venue where customers already browse, while your store lets you organise your own buying journey. Evaluate the actual audience and eligibility of each channel rather than treating potential traffic as confirmed sales.

Review channel rules

Check product restrictions, fees, payment settlement, return handling and customer-data access for the specific marketplace. Include the effort of maintaining catalogue and stock across channels. Rules vary, so a general comparison cannot replace current terms.

Plan consistency

Keep product identity, availability and fulfilment promises aligned wherever you sell. Define how orders reach the team and avoid selling the same last unit twice. You can consider both routes when operations support them, with a clear measurement basis.

Compare how customers find and buy

List what the marketplace provides and what its current terms leave to you. Compare that with the effort of attracting and serving customers on an independent store. Some businesses use both, but stock, pricing and fulfilment still need coordination so two sales routes do not create contradictory promises.
