Planning your store
Is a free or paid Shopify theme better for your store?

A paid theme is worth considering when it gives you useful features you would otherwise have to build. Price alone does not determine the finished store.
Compare the missing work, not just the price
Suppose a free theme covers your menu and product page but lacks a layout essential to your collection. Price that change, then compare it with a paid theme that already does the job. Include support and maintenance, too. A paid theme can still require custom work, and a free theme can look polished with good content. Ask the person who will manage the store to try a routine update before deciding.
Price the missing features
Make a list of requirements such as size information, merchandising sections and navigation patterns. Identify which are already supported by each candidate. A low-cost starting point may need more development; a paid alternative may still need changes. Request estimates for the actual gaps before deciding.
Protect the ability to maintain it
Shopify’s theme editor supports visual customisation, while changes outside its settings can require code. Heavy modifications can make future maintenance more involved. Keep an untouched copy and a record of custom sections so another developer can understand how the store differs from the original.
Buy for the operating model
A small collection and a large seasonal catalogue may need different merchandising tools. Let the team that will update the store try routine tasks before approval. Review the theme developer’s documentation and support terms. Neither a free nor a paid theme guarantees a conversion result.
Price the missing work
Compare the required changes rather than counting demo sections. If a free theme already fits your catalogue, a paid alternative may add little. If it removes genuine implementation work, include that benefit alongside its purchase cost, support terms and any custom changes still needed.
