What changes when Shopify sells digital rather than physical products?
Plan how the buyer receives and accesses the product. Checkout is only the first part of digital fulfilment.
Follow the buyer beyond the receipt
Specify the format, license or entitlement and whether delivery is immediate or manual. Test the actual download or access tool after an appropriate purchase. What happens if the email is wrong, the link expires or the file is updated? Agree who answers those requests. Also check that paid files are not accidentally public. The customer needs clear retrieval instructions, not shipping text copied from a physical-product template.
Define what is delivered
List the file or access entitlement, supported format and usage conditions. Explain whether the buyer receives an immediate download, a manually prepared item or access through another system. Avoid implying delivery is automatic when someone must fulfil it later.
Test access after purchase
Review the appropriate delivery integration and check the customer’s confirmation and retrieval route. Test a valid purchase, an incorrect email and a support request as appropriate. Confirm that files are not unintentionally public before payment.
Plan changes and support
Decide how customers receive corrections or updated versions, and who handles lost access. Use accurate policy wording reviewed for your product and market. A checkout success is only one stage; successful access is the customer outcome.
Test the delivery of the file
Buy a sample through the permitted test route and check when access is granted, how the message arrives and what happens when the link fails. Explain the file format and usage rights before purchase. Removing shipping fields alone does not provide a complete digital-delivery system.
